I don't think that musicians necessarily sit down and think, "What is going to make my audience the most uncomfortable- but obviously, there is an element of that in everything that's happening. In every interaction, there's a certain element of that. This is psychological- the audience is expecting a certain thing and doesn't get it, and they feel angry about that. Then they project that onto the composer, as if to say, "HE's upsetting us!" When, forty years later, the same thing might be just "ho hum...." These things change. Anyone who studies music history will see that what seems disturbing to one group, seems normal to the next group.
