Our first trips to New York in 1980, 81& 82 introduced us to all types of new music which influenced us. Cuban, Brazilian, Latin, Hip Hop, Jazz, Funk and Soul all sounded a lot more interesting than the 'Punk and 'New Wave' that was going on at the time. There was so much going on in New York that one night we would go and see James Brown, the next someone like Mc Coy Tyner, George Clinton, Africa Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash, Airto, Dave Valentine etc etc. The first two times we went to New York we stayed in a loft in Tribeca for six weeks at a time so there was loads of time to soak up all the influences.

Madonna supported us at the Danceteria in New York in 1982 or 83 (not sure). It was her first ever gig as Madonna and her manager paid us one hundred dollars to buy her onto the gig as a showcase. Sire records had heard her demo with Jellybean and were interested in signing her so her manager needed somewhere for her to play. She did four songs with two dancers and the reel-to-reel tape machine with a backing track on it. You could tell she was going to be a star. The next time we saw her was at the Hacienda in Manchester and the rest is history.
